Insider journalists forming union
Journalists at Insider, previously known as Business Insider, as well as web and video workers at the media brand are unionizing, according to a union announcement Monday.
More than 300 workers at the media outlet are creating the union that will be part of the NewsGuild of New York, which also represents journalists at The New York Times, Fortune magazine, Condé Nast, and local papers in the Northeast.
“We’re uniting to demand a seat at the table to bargain for a fair contract and better workplace,” Nico Reyes, a producer at Insider, said in the statement.
The company has said it plans on recognizing the union if that’s what journalists at the media brand want.
“The satisfaction, job security, and happiness of our journalists is extremely important to us. We will fully respect whatever decision our newsroom ultimately makes,” said company spokesman Mario Ruiz.
In its statement, the union said it is looking for “pay equity; better policies around diversity, equity, and inclusion; a reasonable and fairly applied metrics system; and a seat at the table.”
The use of metrics at Insider caught the attention of media observers in early April after a memo was leaked detailing a measurement used at Insider called “impact points.”
