Schiff publishing book about Trump impeachment: report

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is planning a book about former President Trump’s first impeachment, according to a new report.

Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has struck a deal with Random House and publisher Javelin to produce the book, titled “Midnight in Washington: How we almost lost our democracy and still could,” Politico reported Tuesday morning.

The Democrat will reportedly blame the Republican Party for the rise of Trump and the crimes Schiff alleges the former president committed while in office.

“For all his cynicism and shrewdness, Trump could not have come so close to succeeding if his party had stood up to him, if good people hadn’t been silent, or worse, allowed themselves to become complicit,” Schiff writes. “I wanted to relate the private struggles, the triumphs of courage, but more often, the slow surrender of people I worked with and admired to the shameful immorality of a president who could not be trusted.”

Schiff led House Democrats’ first impeachment of Trump, which stemmed from an intelligence community whistleblower report following a phone call between Trump and the president of Ukraine.

During the call, Trump reportedly pressured the Ukrainian leader to publicize politically damaging information about now-President Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Democrats charged Trump’s words amounted to an abuse of power and violation of his constitutional oath.

Trump was later acquitted following a Senate trial after Republicans in the upper chamber refused to call witnesses during what they described as a rushed and partisan impeachment push.

Trump and his allies on Capitol Hill regularly attacked Schiff and Democratic impeachment managers during the trial, calling the California congressman “Shifty” Schiff and painting him as drunk with power and obsessed with career advancement.

Trump was also impeached by the House over his role in the deadly Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol by his supporters and again acquitted in a Senate trial.
