Texas Democrat tweets picture of breakfast to Fox News: ‘You should pay me’

A state lawmaker from Texas tweeted a picture of his breakfast at Fox News on Wednesday after conservatives and the network’s top host mocked him and other lawmakers for leaving their state to fly to Washington, D.C., to advocate for voting legislation.

“BREAKING NEWS @FoxNews!” state Rep. Gene Wu tweeted. “Democrat’s breakfast only includes fruit, yogurt, and coffee! No steak? No whiskey? What a wuss!”

Accompanying Wu’s tweet was a photo of two packages of yogurt, some fruit and a cup of coffee.

“You should pay me,” he added. “Being a Fox News reporter is easy as falling off the back of a pickup truck.”

The lawmakers left Austin as a means of preventing the Republican-controlled state government from passing an election reform bill they say will further restrict voting rights and unfairly target minorities.

Several of the Democratic lawmakers have likened their trip to Washington to actions taken by civil rights activists in the 1960s.

After Democratic state lawmakers from Texas arrived in Washington, D.C., this week, Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who hosts the network’s top-rated program, mocked them for their trip.

Wu tweeted a picture of a salad he was eating on Tuesday, calling it “my first meal as a fugitive.”

“At some point in the modern era it becomes a little hard to distinguish between hero and clinical narcissist,” Carlson said. “Gene Wu is a hero for eating those croutons, how big a hero, well, Gene Wu wouldn’t say, he’s too modest.”

Vice President Harris met with the lawmakers late Tuesday and applauded their efforts. In a fiery speech in Philadelphia earlier in the day, President Biden said Republican efforts to restrict access to the polls are an existential threat to democracy.

“The 21st century Jim Crow assault is real, it’s unrelenting, and we’re going to challenge it vigorously. While this broad assault against voting rights is not unprecedented, it is taking on new and pernicious forms,” Biden said. “We’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. I’m not saying this to alarm you, I’m saying this because you should be alarmed.”
