Reid challenges Bush on immigration
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) yesterday challenged President Bush to rally congressional Republicans behind the Senate’s immigration bill.
In a nationally televised address Monday night, Bush tempered his endorsement of a temporary-worker program with an announcement that he plans to send 6,000 members of the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexican border.
But Reid said Bush has not gone far enough to pave the way for enactment of a carefully brokered Senate plan.
The president “needs to look first at his Republican leadership in the Senate and say something negative about this monstrous House bill,” Reid told reporters.
