Despite resignation, Conyers still wants Goodling to testify

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) continued to press for the testimony of a top aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales after she abruptly resigned Friday.

Monica Goodling, who was at the center of a controversial plan to dismiss eight U.S. attorneys, resigned Friday, the Associated Press reported.

“Chairman Conyers remains committed to questioning Monica Goodling, especially with this new development,” a Conyers’ spokesperson said in a written statement issued Friday evening. “Her involvement and general knowledge of what happened makes her a valuable piece to this puzzle.”

The resignation comes two weeks after Goodling invoked her 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination when asked to testify before Congress about her role in the firings.
