Senators support Iraq Study Group recommendations
Senators who chided President Bush for failing to consider fully the bipartisan Iraq Study Group (ISG) recommendations as a basis for future war policy soon will have the chance to put their money where their mouths were, thanks to Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Ken Salazar (D-Colo.).
Alexander and Salazar yesterday released a “Dear Colleague” letter marshaling support for a measure they plan to introduce in the coming weeks that would adopt the ISG’s blueprint for withdrawal from Iraq as official policy.
“That [the ISG members] were able to reach unanimous agreement on a new way forward in Iraq is proof that we too can find common ground,” Alexander and Salazar wrote in their letter. “We hope that you will consider this legislation as a means to do just that.”
The senators received an early endorsement from former Rep. Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.), co-chairman of the ISG.
