Sunday shows: Race to November
The Sunday morning shows will focus primarily on the path forward after Tuesday’s Republican primary results, balanced with foreign policy.
CNN’s “State of the Union” will host Sen. Jim
DeMint (R-S.C.) who found himself at the center of tensions this week
between Tea Party insurgent candidates and the Republican
establishment. DeMint will likely be asked for his assessment of the
GOP’s future, and about his recent comment that he’d rather see the
party stand for principle than “win in November.” Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine will talk about his party’s effort to regain its message during a tough midterm season.
{mosads}Former Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) and former White House Communications Director Anita Dunn will also appear on CNN.
“Fox News Sunday” will also focus on the GOP primary results by
hosting veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove and Alaska GOP Senate candidate Joe Miller, a Tea Party favorite who now faces a write-in challenge from the defeated incumbent, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).
ABC’s “This Week” will take a different approach this Sunday by
hosting Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to talk about the administration’s Mideast peace initiatives and Iranian president
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is coming to New York to speak at the U.N. General Assembly that begins Sept. 23. Ahmadinejad may also comment on Iran’s
release on bail of American hiker Sarah Shourd this week after imprisoning her
for a year on charges of espionage. Clinton has repeatedly called for
the release of Shourd’s two companions, who remain incarcerated in
Tehran.
MSNBC’s “Meet the Press” will feature Colin Powell, who may be
asked for his opinion on the repeal provision for “Don’t ask, don’t
tell” to be included in a defense authorization bill that comes before
the Senate next week. The show will also include an appearance from
former President Bill Clinton, who may be led to comment on his spat with
California gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown (D), who he subsequently
endorsed.
Clinton, who will also be on “Face the Nation,” is hitting the talk shows as he prepares to host his sixth annual Clinton Global
Initiative, a gathering of world leaders to find and implement
solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.
