Wynn to endorse no one in primary

Facing what could be a hotly contested primary race of his own, Rep. Albert Wynn (D-Md.) said he would not endorse a candidate for president in the 2008 primary.

In 2004, Wynn initially backed former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) and then drummed up support so that nominee Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) would select Edwards as his running mate.

A liberal political activist, Donna Edwards, tried to defeat Wynn in last year’s Democratic primary, gaining momentum because liberals were upset with Wynn’s votes for authorizing the Iraq war and a bankruptcy reform bill. Wynn prevailed. He now is the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Environmental and Hazardous Materials subcommittee.

Facing a second challenge from Donna Edwards, Wynn said he is “keeping my head down” and is remaining “neutral” on the topic of the 2008 Democratic presidential contenders.
