December Dem debate cancelled due to writers’ dispute
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has cancelled its Dec. 10 presidential debate because of the impending strike of CBS news writers, the committee announced Wednesday.
{mosads}Several of the major Democratic candidates, including frontrunner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.), pledged to abstain from the debate if the writers went forward with a strike. The writers indicated that they were leaning toward a strike on the day of the debate.
The situation at CBS is related to, but separate from the ongoing television and film writers strike. Both are represented by the Writers Guild of America.
“Due to the uncertainty created by the ongoing labor dispute between CBS and the Writers Guild of America, the DNC has canceled the Dec. 10 debate in Los Angeles. There are no plans to re-schedule,” said DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney.
