NRCC account is back in the black

Excitement over recent special-election victories has catapulted the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) out of the red and into the black for the first time since the devastating 2006 elections.

{mosads}“Yes, we are in the black as of today,” NRCC spokeswoman Julie Shutley said Tuesday, indicating that the NRCC’s cash on hand has risen past its debt of $3.6 million, which was incurred last year when the GOP unsuccessfully tried to defend its House majority. Checks from the individual campaign committees of Republican lawmakers began rolling in on Tuesday morning as a result of a fundraising push led by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.).

“It has a lot to do with the excitement surrounding the special elections,” Shutley said. “This makes for an early Christmas.”

The donations also highlighted contests occurring outside the 2008 House races. Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.), a candidate for the top Republican Ways and Means slot that will be vacated by Rep. Jim McCrery (La.), gave $400,000. His challenger, Rep. Wally Herger (R-Calif.), gave $250,000 to the NRCC last week.
