Man with loaded shotgun arrested near Capitol
A man carrying a shotgun, a sword and a bag of ammunition was arrested around 1 p.m. Friday and taken into custody by Capitol Police after an officer spotted him walking toward the Capitol near First and D streets Northeast.
After being identified by officers, Michael Steven Gorbey, 38, responded to verbal commands, was apprehended and transported to Capitol Police headquarters.
{mosads}Officers identified a pick-up truck with Utah license plates, driven by Gorbey, on D St and released a bomb unit to search for hazardous or suspicious materials using a robotic device. More than four hours later it was deemed safe according to Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.
“There were no shots fired and no injuries,” Schneider said in describing the arrest. She added that the arrest involved more than one officer.
While the investigation is still ongoing, Gorbey is being charged with federal crimes of possessing a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
Police cordoned the area and evacuated part of the Teamsters building because of its proximity to the vehicle, which was on Capitol grounds yet not within the barricaded portion of the area.
Police plan to take up the investigation again on Tuesday, after the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday.
