Two injured after security barrier malfunctions

Two people are being treated for non-life threatening injuries after a mechanical security barrier malfunctioned, rose up unexpectedly and hit a silver minivan.

{mosads}Both the driver and the passenger were treated at the scene by the Washington D.C. fire department and then transported to the hospital, according to U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

The accident took place at around 3 p.m. at the intersection of 1st Street N.W. and Constitution Avenue N.W. The minivan was headed east on Constitution Avenue toward the Capitol.

Capitol Police are on the scene repairing the malfunctioned barrier and investigating what caused the mishap. They have finished testing all of the other security barriers for possible fault or failure, with no further irregularities.
