Stabenow’s husband expresses sorrow over prostitution incident

Thomas Athans, the husband of Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) who was reportedly caught up in a prostitution sting, said Wednesday that “no words can fully express how sorry I am.”

{mosads}Athans was reacting to a report from the Detroit Free Press, which said he had admitted to paying a prostitute $150 for sex but was not charged or arrested.

In a statement released by his attorney Todd Flood, Athans said he “took responsibility for my actions and fully cooperated with law enforcement” when the incident occurred.

“My family and I are dealing with this matter in a personal and private way,” he added in the statement.

Earlier, Stabenow’s office had released a statement from the senator, saying: “This is very disturbing and serious. Obviously it’s a deeply difficult and personal matter.”
