Superdelegates set to call for foreign policy unity

A group of committed and uncommitted Democratic congressional superdelegates will call Thursday for foreign policy unity — including a call to end the Iraq war — regardless of who wins the Democratic nomination.

Representatives who have endorsed either Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) or Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), plus two who are uncommitted, will hold a conference call with reporters Thursday morning to outline their plea for party unity on ending the Iraq war, negotiations with Iran and closure of the Guantánamo Bay detention facility.

{mosads}Members participating will announce a new campaign to urge superdelegates to sign a petition encouraging the Democratic Party to adopt those and other foreign policy stances into the Democratic National Platform, according to a release from the call’s host, the group Win Without War.

The call is scheduled to feature former Rep. Tom Andrews (D-Maine), Win Without War’s national director; Reps. Jan Schakowsky (Ill.), John Lewis (Ga.) and Barbara Lee (Calif.), who are endorsing Obama; and Reps. James McGovern (Mass.) and Maurice Hinchey (N.Y.), who are endorsing Clinton.

Reps. Rush Holt (N.J.) and Sam Farr (Calif.) are the two uncommitted superdelegates joining the call.

“While the superdelegates disagree on who should be commander in chief, they all agree the Democratic Party should be united around calling for a responsible end to the war in Iraq, a diplomatic surge with Iran and an end to the use of torture,” the Win Without War release said.
