Abramoff to face sentencing in September

Former lobbyist Jack Abramoff likely will face sentencing in September for his wide-ranging corruption schemes.

{mosads}In a court motion filed Monday, attorneys on both sides of the case asked the court to set a sentencing date sometime in early September. Abramoff pleaded guilty in January 2006 but has been cooperating with prosecutors about others’ involvement in an attempt to receive a lighter sentence.

The sentencing could be an indication that the case is either winding down or taking a new turn.

However, Abramoff is not completely off the hook yet. Government attorneys indicated that they anticipate his cooperation in the form of possible testimony for the “foreseeable future.”

"The parties believe that they are in a position to inform the court about the full scope of his misconduct and cooperation, and that, consistent with the commitments in the pleas agreement with Mr. Abramoff, sentencing in the near future in this case is appropriate,” the lawyers wrote in the motion.
