On Roe anniversary, Obama vows to reduce abortions

President Obama used the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision to renew his support for the right of women to seek abortions while pledging to prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the number of abortions.

{mosads}”[T]his decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: That government should not intrude on our most private family matters,” Obama said in a statement. “I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.”

The president called for an expansion of access to contraception as well as better health information for women, while also tying the anniversary of the decision to the larger struggle for equal rights for women.

“On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: The chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams,” Obama said.

Jan. 22 serves as an annual opportunity for organizations on both sides of the abortion issue to renew the often bitter battle over the issue. Anti-abortion groups use the day to march on the Supreme Court, while abortion rights groups hold events around the country.
