Bush extends sanctions against Zimbabwe
President Bush on Friday signed an executive order that will expand sanctions against the “illegitimate government of Zimbabwe.”
{mosads}“No regime should ignore the will of its own people and calls from the international community without consequences,” Bush said in a statement. The move was a reaction to a Zimbabwean election runoff in which President Robert Mugabe won after opponent Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew out of fear that his supporters could be persecuted.
Under the order, the Treasury Department will target several government-controlled individuals and entities that are connected to Mugabe’s regime.
The president also authorized a package of $2.5 million from the U.S. Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund “to assist Zimbabwean refugees and asylum seekers who have been displaced due to the ongoing violence in their country.”
