Jenkins tops Ryun in primary, will face Boyda
Kansas state treasurer Lynn Jenkins on Tuesday won the GOP primary and the right to face freshman Rep. Nancy Boyda (D-Kan.) in November, defeating former Rep. Jim Ryun.
Jenkins led Ryun 51-49 with 100 percent of precincts in.
{mosads}Boyda is one of the Democrats’ most vulnerable members, as she holds down one of the most conservative districts her party picked off in 2006 after her upset of Ryun.
Ryun and Jenkins engaged in an ideological battle, with Jenkins supported by moderate organizations like the Republican Main Street Partnership and Ryun backed by more conservative groups.
The former lawmaker held leads in some internal polling on the 2nd district race, but Jenkins is a two-term statewide officeholder.
In the state’s Senate primary, former Rep. Jim Slattery (D) prevailed, as expected, and will face Sen. Pat Roberts (R) in a lower-tier race.
Slattery led Democrat Lee Jones 69-31 with 99 percent of precincts in.
In the 3rd district, favored state Sen. Nick Jordan sailed to victory with 76 percent in the GOP primary and will face Rep. Dennis Moore (D) in a top-targeted race.
