Obama assassination plot not seen as credible

A suspected plot to assassinate Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is not credible, according to federal authorities investigating the matter.

“We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado,” said Troy A. Eid, U.S. attorney for Colorado, in a statement.

{mosads}At least four people were arrested in connection with a plot against Obama over the past two days. Authorities found two high-powered, scoped rifles in a car along with camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope, licenses in the names of other people and methamphetamines.

Eid is scheduled to give a press conference Tuesday afternoon to release more details of the plot and the men involved.

Shortly after the arrests authorities said they believed there was a plot to kill Obama during his speech Thursday night at Invesco Field. But the Joint Information Center (JIC), a combined federal and local security force, said no changes had been made to the security arrangements for the speech.

Invesco Field is the Denver Broncos open-air stadium that seats 75,000 and sits along an Interstate highway, which will be closed for the four hours of Obama’s acceptance.

“We had already put together a very comprehensive, measured and layered security plan for Invesco Field,” said Malcom Wiley, a spokesman for the Secret Service and a member of the JIC. “So the things that were alleged to have happened in the last couple of days wouldn’t alter our plans.”
