Armed man arrested on Capitol Hill

A man with arrested near the Capitol Friday after Capitol Police searched his vehicle and found an assortment of weapons, authorities said.

Christopher Shelton Timmons, 27, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon. Capitol Police say he could face additional charges.

{mosads}Capitol Police say Timmons was driving in his Jeep Cherokee around 10:45 a.m. when he pulled up next to a Capitol Police officer at 2nd St. and Independence Ave., SE and asked for directions. The officer saw a rifle case inside the Jeep Cherokee, according to a statement from Capitol Hill police.

Officers then closed several streets in the immediate area and searched the jeep, where they discovered a rifle, a grenade, a pistol, ammunition and “several other items of concern to the police,” the statement said.

Timmons was the only person in the vehicle.

All streets were reopened to traffic Friday afternoon.

Congress is currently on recess and scheduled to return to business on Monday.
