Rep. McCarthy tapped as Cantor’s chief deputy

Incoming House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) on Monday announced
the selection of close ally and fellow GOP “Young Guns” member Rep. Kevin
McCarthy (Calif.) as his chief deputy whip.

{mosads}McCarthy, just elected to only his second term, is now set to
become the highest appointed member of the Republican Conference for the 111th
Congress.

“Being entrusted by my friend Republican Whip Eric Cantor to serve
in the House Republican Leadership as Chief Deputy Republican Whip is an
enormous honor,” McCarthy said in a joint statement he released with
Cantor. “We will be part of the solution to turn the page toward a new era
of Republican leadership. I am proud to begin this mission on the innovative
path to a better future.”

Cantor and McCarthy both stressed the need to rebuild the
Republican Party after its second consecutive devastating loss to Democrats,
and vowed to serve as a “check and balance to the power of Speaker [Nancy]
Pelosi [D-Calif.] and President-elect Obama.”

Cantor said that he is looking forward “to focusing on rebuilding
our party and working towards innovative solutions to help the middle-class
taxpayers of America.”
