Toomey says official decision ‘very soon’
Former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said Wednesday that he is very close to a final decision on a primary challenge to Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), and that he is leaning toward a run.
Toomey has only been granting interviews to select outlets since sources said last week that he told them he was running.
{mosads}On Wednesday, he went on local radio station WILK to talk about Specter and his political future.
He sounded like a candidate and suggested that current obligations, including his leadership at the Club for Growth, have prevented him from making his bid official.
“I’ve got to make sure that we have a smooth transition and everything is under way there,” Toomey said. “I’m actually finishing up a book and just putting the finishing touches on that. … I’ve just got a few more things to tend to, but I think you’ll be hearing from me very soon.”
Specter has polled terribly among Republicans in recent weeks and has drawn the ire of his party for voting in favor of the Democratic-led stimulus bill.
The senator went on WILK on Tuesday and criticized Toomey for favoring deregulation.
