The Week Ahead: President Obama’s West Coast swing

The House is the only chamber in session this week, and Republicans announced the lower chamber will vote on two jobs bills.

No doubt they’re trying to play catch-up with the Senate, which is out this week but voted on a piece of President Obama’s jobs proposal and a competing Republican measure Thursday night. Both of those packages failed.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) announced the lower chamber’s plans on Friday.

“The House will vote to repeal the 3 percent withholding rule to remove unnecessary costs on businesses already facing uncertainty,” he said. “The House will also vote on a measure sponsored by Congressman Paul Gosar [R-(Ariz.)] to provide for the development of our nation’s copper resources, enabling thousands of private sector jobs to be created and generating economic growth.”

Meanwhile, Obama will make a West Coast campaign swing in the early part of the week and will be on “The Tonight Show” Tuesday evening.

And members of the debt-reduction supercommittee will hold their first public meeting in a month on Wednesday.

Monday, Oct. 24

Obama will travel to Las Vegas to promote his jobs plan and to attend a campaign event. From there, he will head to Los Angeles for campaign events.

Vice President Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will join World Food Program USA at a State Department event honoring Cargill CEO Greg Page, Howard Buffett and Bill Gates for their contributions to reducing global hunger. The event is part of The Global Hunger Conference.

TMZ’s Harvey Levin speaks at a National Press Club luncheon at 1 p.m.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski speaks to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at 9 a.m. on how to prepare small business for cyber threats.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will be in Concord, N.H., to formally file his paperwork for the New Hampshire primary.

Tuesday, Oct. 25

Obama appears on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” It will mark his fourth appearance on the show — his second as president.

After he tapes his appearance, he will head to San Francisco for a campaign event and then go on to Denver, where he will remain overnight.

Michelle Obama will be in Chicago, where she’ll visit a Walgreens that was expanded to include produce as part of her Let’s Move! Initiative. Then the first lady and Mayor Rahm Emanuel will visit Iron Street Urban Farms, a 7-acre site on the city’s South Side that has local, year-round produce.

She’ll also meet with mayors from around the country, who will be in Chicago for a summit on food accessibility.

Wednesday, Oct. 26

Obama will promote his jobs plan in Denver and then head back to Washington.

Members of the congressional supercommittee will hear from Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf at 10 a.m. in 216 Hart.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Govs. Nikki Haley (R-S.C.) and Bob McDonnell (R-Va.) will participate in a U.S. Chamber of Commerce legal summit. It begins at 8:30 a.m.

Romney will hold a breakfast fundraiser in Washington, D.C., with various members of Congress, and he’ll hold a campaign event and fundraiser in Fairfax, Va., later in the day.

Thursday, Oct. 27

Obama will have an Oval Office meeting with Prime Minister Petr Nečas of the Czech Republic.

Clinton testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on “Afghanistan and Pakistan: Transition and the Way Forward.” It begins at 10 a.m. in 2172 Rayburn.

Michelle Obama will be in Tampa, Fla., for a campaign fundraiser.

The House Natural Resources Committee will explore the independent $20 billion compensation pool that BP agreed to fund last year after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Kenneth Feinberg, the fund’s administrator, will be the star witness. The hearing takes place at 9:30 a.m. in 1324 Longworth.

Friday, Oct. 28

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) will address the influential conservative group Cornerstone Action at its annual gala in Manchester, N.H.
