The Hill names Bob Cusack Editor in Chief
Washington, D.C.—July 28, 2014—The Hill, publication of record for policy influencers inside and outside Washington, today announced that Bob Cusack has been named Editor in Chief.
Cusack has led the day-to-day management of The Hill as Managing Editor since 2004. Prior to that, he was the paper’s Business and Lobbying Editor. He has won five awards from the National Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists for investigative articles on a range of issues, including national security, healthcare and presidential politics. Cusack regularly appears as a political analyst on networks such as Fox, CNN, and MSNBC, among others.
“For more than a decade, Bob has played a leading role in keeping The Hill at the forefront of Washington coverage and he has been a key player in our expansion,” said James Finkelstein, Chairman of Capitol Hill Publishing. “Bob’s talent as an editor and encyclopedic knowledge of politics will drive our continued growth, making this the most dynamic and essential news brand for policymakers and those who follow and influence politics.”
Cusack announced several other appointments at The Hill. Current News Editor Ian Swanson is being tapped as Managing Editor to replace Cusack, while Business and Lobbying Editor Dustin Weaver will replace Swanson as News Editor.
“Ian and Dustin are outstanding journalists whose dedication keeps readers informed with breaking news and critical insight they won’t get anywhere else,” said Cusack. “As The Hill stands at an exciting and transformative time, my mission is to continue to raise the bar by driving hard-hitting political reporting and delivering relevant analysis on the issues which shape public life.”
Cusack also announced that Politico’s Scott Wong is joining The Hill. Wong, author of Politico’s popular morning tip sheet, will cover House Republicans as a senior staff writer.
Simultaneous with Cusack’s promotion, The Hill’s Publisher Adam Prather announced that Diana Marrero is being hired as Director of Content Partnerships, coming from The Washington Post. She will report to Prather.
“Our advertising partners are drawn to the strength of our brand and initiatives,” says Prather. “Bringing Diana on capitalizes on the importance of innovative programs that tap into that equity.”
Shannan Bowen, previously at Atlantic Media Strategies, also was recently named Director of Audience Engagement, joining Deputy Managing Editor/Special Projects Director Jennifer Yingling’s social media group.
The Hill attracts about 7 million visits a month, in addition to its print circulation, and is read by opinion leaders, including 100% of Congressional offices, the White House and the Executive Branch, political pundits, association executives, lobbyists, think tanks and corporate leaders. According to a 2014 Erdos & Morgan readership survey, The Hill has the most relevant & valuable congressional coverage, the most reliable reporting and is preferred overall for congressional news coverage. The Hill’s readership is also highly engaged, with online visitors averaging more time per page than at other Congressional publications, per comScore.
Hugo Gurdon is leaving The Hill after 11 years to assume a new role at the Washington Examiner.
Finkelstein said, “Hugo has been an outstanding editor at The Hill and a great friend. He is leaving for a new and different opportunity. We can’t thank him enough for what he has accomplished at The Hill. All of us at The Hill wish him nothing but the best.”
