Professor shot dead at Mississippi university
A professor has been shot dead at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., according to multiple reports.
Authorities have identified the victim as assistant history professor Ethan Schmidt. The school tweeted earlier Monday there was one fatality.
{mosads}The shooting was reported on the Mississippi campus shortly before 11 a.m., prompting a lockdown, with students instructed to stay indoors and away from the windows as authorities worked to track down the suspect.
Police identified Shannon Lamb, another Delta State employee, as a person of interest in the shooting.
Lamb spoke with police at some point during a daylong manhunt for him Monday and said he wasn’t going to jail, according to CNN.
When Lamb pulled over his car in Greenville, a town about 40 miles southwest of the school, he ran into the woods, where police say they heard a gunshot. They found his body and he was pronounced dead.
William LaForge, the school’s president, announced shortly after midnight Monday that the lockdown was over and the suspect was apprehended. He also announced a candlelight vigil for Schmidt on Tuesday evening.
Police have not established a motive for the shootings.
Lamb was a geography and social science education instructor at the school, according to his profile on its website.
Police in Gautier, which is 300 miles, away named Shannon Lamb as the suspect in a fatal shooting of a woman at a home there, according to the multiple reports. Authorities said Lamb and the victim were romantically involved.
More than 4,000 students are enrolled at Delta State University.
