Colbert to address Dems on Friday
LANSDOWNE, Va. – House Democrats will conclude their annual retreat here with a dose of levity: Comedian Stephen Colbert will speak to their caucus on Friday.
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) invited the popular satirist, who plays a conservative commentator that regularly denounces Democrats and lampoons Republicans on his Comedy Central show.
{mosads}Colbert will have the tables turned on Friday; after making remarks to the caucus, he will be interviewed in front of House Democrats by Pelosi.
“We assume this is Stephen Colbert’s attempt at bipartisanship,” Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill explained.
Colbert’s appearance will be closed to the press. Former President Bill Clinton will also be delivering private remarks to the caucus on Friday.
Colbert will be speaking to a group that his sister, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, is seeking to join. Colbert-Busch recently launched a bid for the Democratic nomination in the special election to replace Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) in the House.
Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) announced Colbert’s appearance to House Democrats on Thursday. It was first reported by Politico.
