Dozens dead in Baghdad after ISIS bombings

Dozens of people are dead in Baghdad after a series of bombings on Monday, according to the BBC.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks in the Iraqi capital, which is still reeling from two suicide bombings that killed 28 people on Saturday.

{mosads}The BBC reported that at least 35 people were killed and 61 were injured by a blast in the predominantly Shia Muslim eastern district of Sadr City. The death toll there is still climbing.

Monday’s bombings come as French President Francois Hollande vowed to defeat ISIS at a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al Abadi.

“The terrorists will attempt to attack civilians in order to make up for their losses, but we assure the Iraqi people and the world that we are able to end terrorism and shorten its life,” said Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, according to the BBC.

State Department spokesman John Kirby issued a statement Monday condemning the attacks, saying the “vicious acts of mass murder are a sobering reminder of the need to continue coalition operations” against ISIS and the threat it poses.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms terrorist attacks this weekend in Baghdad and Najaf,” Kirby said, referencing ISIS’s claim of dual attacks in Baghdad’s Al-Sinek neighborhood that killed at least 28 people Saturday as well as Monday’s attacks.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and hope for a speedy recovery of all those wounded,” he said.
