Report: Hackers tried to breach DNC after Obama’s Russia sanctions

The FBI warned the Democratic National Committee (DNC) about continued attempts to hack its computer systems as recently as Dec. 31, BuzzFeed News reported

“There was activity the day after the president issued sanctions [against Russia], looking for ways to get into the servers,” a high-level source familiar with the investigation told the website.

{mosads}A separate intelligence official said there have been “multiple attempts” to breach the DNC since the election.

“Many of these attempts are not serious… hackers are trying to re-enter the DNC system but as far as we understand their attempts have not been successful,” the official said.

Crowdstrike, a private cybersecurity firm that investigated the DNC hack, has been helping bolster its security, BuzzFeed reported.

Russian hackers are believed to have accessed the DNC’s systems and given documents, including troves of emails, to sites like WikiLeaks in an attempt to undermine the party’s nominee Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump win the White House.

A report from the Intelligence Community released Friday said that hackers had access to the DNC’s systems for nearly a year.

President Obama recently announced new retaliatory measures against the country over its meddling in the U.S. election, including sanctions against intelligence agencies and the expulsion of 35 Russian officials from the U.S.
