Pope Francis says he won’t try to alter Trump’s stances on environment, immigration

Pope Francis on Saturday said he will not try to alter President Trump’s stances on the environment or immigration when the two meet later this month, The Associated Press reported.

“I never make a judgment about a person without hearing him out,” Francis told reporters on his plane.

The pope previously denounced Trump’s plans to build a wall on the United States’ border with Mexico.

{mosads}“A person who thinks only about building walls — wherever they may be — and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said in February of 2016, according to The AP.

Francis and Trump are expected to meet on May 24 during Trump’s first foreign trip of his presidency.

When the pope was asked specifically about tempering Trump’s political stances, Francis said doing so would be “a political calculation.”

“That is a political calculation that I don’t allow myself to make. Also in the religious sphere: I don’t proselytize,” he said.
