Hillary Clinton defends London mayor after Trump tweets

Hillary Clinton on Monday praised London Mayor Sadiq Khan following President Trump’s criticism of his response to a recent terror attack there. 

“This is a time for us to reach out to the world, to understand more about what is happening,” she said, according to The Washington Examiner. “Not just in our own country, but indeed across the globe.”

“It is time for steady, determined leadership like we are seeing from London’s mayor and local authorities,” Clinton added at a fundraiser for Rep. Elijah Cummings’s (D-Md.) youth program on Monday night.

{mosads}Clinton reportedly did not criticize Trump by name, but warned against politicians using Saturday’s attack to advance their personal interests.

“This is not the time to lash out, to incite fear and use trash talk and terror for political gain,” the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee said.

Trump on Monday doubled down on his criticism of Khan’s response to the attack in London that killed seven people and wounded at least 48 others.

“Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his ‘no reason to be alarmed’ statement,” he tweeted. “MSM is working hard to sell it!”

“At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!’” Trump tweeted on Sunday.

Trump was seemingly referencing Khan’s comment earlier Sunday that Londoners should expect “an increased police presence” in their city following the attack.

“There’s no reason to be alarmed,” he said in a statement that Trump appeared to take out of context. “One of the things the police and all of us need to do is ensure we’re as safe as we possibly can be.”

Attackers on Saturday drove a van into pedestrians on the London Bridge before stabbing others near the city’s Borough Market.
