The attorney for Reality Winner on Wednesday urged people to judge the alleged National Security Agency leaker by what her family has said about her, instead of by her tweets.
During an interview on CNN’s “New Day,” Titus Nichols was asked what role he thinks Winner’s tweets against President Trump will play in her case.
Nichols said there are “strict rules of what documents or so-called social media pages can and cannot come into trial.”
{mosads}”So while we can talk about them all day long on television, when it comes to the actual trial and court proceeding, that’s going to be a different matter,” he said.
“Now for a better idea of who she is, I think her parents have done a phenomenal job in explaining to the world who she is as a person, not just this figure that’s been created in the span of week.”
Nichols also said it is too early to comment on anything related to the “merits of the case.”
“The only thing we can focus on is just being prepared for court and doing what’s in the best interest of Ms. Winner,” he said.
“All I know is we’re prepared for our next hearing and we’re going to give her the best defense possible.”
He urged people not to rush to judgment on the case.
The Justice Department on Monday charged Winner, who worked as a government contractor, with sharing top-secret material with a media outlet.
On Monday, The Intercept published a report from classified documents claiming that Russian intelligence hacked hundreds of local election officials just days before the November 2016 presidential election.
According to a Justice Department press release, the FBI obtained a warrant over the weekend to search Winner’s home, where she admitted to intentionally removing classified materials and mailing them to The Intercept.
