Police investigating blast at Islamic center in Minn.

Police and federal authorities are investigating a blast at an Islamic center in Minnesota that occurred early Saturday morning.

CBS Minnesota reported that the building of the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington, Minn., was damaged by smoke and fire from the blast, but no injuries were reported.

According to CBS, the fire was small enough that community members were able to extinguish it before emergency services arrived.

FBI and ATF agents have joined the investigation, but a motive has not yet been established and police say it is too early to call it a hate crime, according to CBS.

The Associated Press reported that members of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota say a man threw an explosive device through a window that started a fire in the Imam’s office. Fifteen to 20 people were in the Islamic center at the time of the blast for morning prayers, according to the AP.

Asad Zaman, director of the Society, told CBS that a $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspected arsonist.

At a press conference, Zaman said the Islamic center had received hateful messages of hate before.

“Hate is not OK. We need a better America where people are safe with their neighbors,” he said. “Targeting people because of their race or religion is absolutely un-American.”
