State Dept: One American killed in Barcelona attack

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday that one American was among the 14 people killed in the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain.

On Thursday, a van rammed pedestrians at a popular tourist location, Las Ramblas, in Barcelona. Dozens more were injured.

Tillerson on Friday expressed his “deepest sympathies” to the family of the American who died, whom he did not identify.

“We have now received word and confirmed the death of one American citizen in the terrorist attacks in Spain,” Tillerson said at a press conference.

“We are still confirming the injuries and deaths of others, but obviously we express our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of this individual, and obviously others who have suffered loss of life, and we offer our thoughts and prayers to their families, as they’re going to be dealing with a few very, very tough days ahead of them,” he said.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) took credit for the attack Thursday night. Spanish police are reporting at least 50 others are injured.

A day earlier, Tillerson was among the countless American officials who condemned the attack.

“Terrorists around the world should know the United States and our allies are resolved to find you and bring you to justice,” he said in a statement.

A second vehicle attack struck Spain early Friday morning in the town of Cambrils. Seven people were injured and five attackers shot to death after an Audi 3 plowed into civilians and tourists. 

Police believe the attacks are connected.
