Bill Gates: ‘Very disappointed’ with decision to end DACA

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is speaking out against the Trump administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Gates said he is “very disappointed” with the decision to end the program, which shields young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents from deportation.

“Hundreds of thousands of young people who have been educated in the United States and have played by the rules their whole lives will be forced to live under the threat that they will be separated from their families, friends, and communities,” Gates said.

{mosads}Gates said he has been “incredibly impressed” with the “Dreamers” he has met over the years — using a term commonly applied to DACA recipients — adding that they have been “raised as Americans and have taken that responsibility seriously.”

“Dreamers represent the best instincts of this country and the tradition that the great experiment of the United States is made better by people from other places coming here to dedicate their talents and commitment to continuing to move our country forward,” Gates said in the post.

“I hope that Congress will quickly pass a permanent fix to allow these young people to stay in the country without the destructive fear of deportation.”

The Trump administration announced Tuesday it was ending the Obama-era program.

President Trump in a written statement cast former President Obama’s creation of DACA as beyond his constitutional responsibilities.

Trump tweeted Tuesday night that Congress has six months to “legalize DACA.”

“If they can’t I will revisit the issue!” Trump tweeted.
