Major earthquake rocks Mexico City

A major earthquake jolted Mexico City on Tuesday, toppling buildings on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that killed thousands.

The United States Geological Service reported Tuesday’s earthquake was a 7.1 magnitude quake with an epicenter about 50 miles southwest of downtown Mexico City.

Initial reports on social media showed fallen buildings and a massive crack at the access point for the city’s international airport.

The earthquake was felt hours after a citywide earthquake drill commemorating the anniversary of the 1985 quake.

An 8.1 magnitude earthquake hit southern Mexico last week, causing extensive damage and nearly 100 deaths in the southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, but leaving the capital unscathed.
