At least 104 dead in Mexico after powerful earthquake

At least 104 people are dead after an earthquake rocked parts of Mexico on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

Graco Ramirez, the governor of Morelos, had previously said at least 42 people were killed in the Mexican state, while State of Mexico Gov. Alfredo Del Mazo said at least five people had died in his state and two more deaths were reported in Puebla, according to Reuters.

The United States Geological Service said the quake registered a 7.1 magnitude strength with an epicenter about 50 miles southwest of downtown Mexico City.

The earthquake comes after a citywide earthquake drill commemorating the anniversary of a 1985 quake that killed thousands of people.

An 8.1 magnitude quake struck southern Mexico last week, causing damage and killing nearly 100 people in the southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.
