Sanders would’ve beaten Trump, Jane Sanders says

Jane Sanders says in a new interview that her husband, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), would have beaten President Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

“I think he would have won. I have very little doubt he would have won,” Jane Sanders told the Irish Times.

“Because American people wanted change and they weren’t willing to vote for the status quo.”

{mosads}Sanders also said she doesn’t think the Vermont senator “stood in the way” of Hillary Clinton, who defeated him in the Democratic primary, winning the election.

“I think she would have lost to Trump anyway, not because she should have but because she was the wrong candidate at the time,” Sanders said.

“There was a sense in the country, that we felt palpably from people, that, yes, we’ve made progress in some areas, but many of us have been left behind, and nobody is speaking to us.”

She added that there was a sense that Clinton would have been a third term for former President Obama.

“There is nothing wrong with that, but that’s not what they wanted at that time, and that’s not what they want now,” she said.

“I think the American people, through the healthy exchange of ideas, understood that they could do better as a country, in terms of healthcare, affordable education, affordable housing.”

Her husband, Sanders said, was “the candidate for change.”

“Trump was the candidate for change,” she said.

“And Secretary Clinton was the candidate for keeping steady on the path. That was not what the American people were looking for.”

Clinton in her new book criticized Bernie Sanders for doing “lasting damage” to her campaign and “paving the way” for Trump’s attacks against her as “Crooked Hillary.”

Jane Sanders also said her husband hasn’t stopped fighting for what he believes in since he lost the Democratic primary.

“Bernie didn’t feel he had the opportunity to stop: this is not the time to lay back, relax and pay attention to ourselves,” she said. “We have to go out and fight. He’s never stopped from the time he didn’t win the primary.”

The Washington Post reported in July that a federal investigation into Sanders had escalated.

The FBI was reportedly looking into whether she falsified loan documents while she was president of Burlington College, which closed down in May 2016 after going bankrupt and failing to meet accreditation standards.
