Texas Democratic megadonor dies at 46
A major Texas Democratic donor who supported candidates such as former Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) and former Houston Mayor Bill White (D) has died at the age of 46, The Texas Tribune reported on Thursday.
Steve Mostyn, a top Houston trial lawyer who has donated millions to Democratic candidates in Texas and elsewhere around the U.S., died after “a sudden onset and battle with a mental health issue,” according to a statement provided to the news outlet by his wife, Amber Mostyn. She did not provide a cause of death.
“Steve was a beloved husband and devoted father who adored his children and never missed any of their sporting activities. He was a true friend, and a faithful fighter for those who did not have a voice,” Mostyn said in the statement.
{mosads}”If you or a loved one are thinking about suicide, or experiencing a health crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline right now at 1-800-273-8255,” she added.
Mostyn was a top enemy of Rick Perry, a former Texas governor and the current Energy secretary. In 2010, Mostyn took out a full-page ad in Texas newspapers labeling Perry a “coward” for refusing to debate White, who at the time was running for governor. He also has donated more than $3 million to Davis’s political efforts over her career.
“Steve was a giant,” Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa told the Tribune. “He was the epitome of a Texas Democrat — big, bold, fearless, and caring. He dedicated his professional and personal life to fighting for the little guy.”
“I am heartbroken,” added Davis on Twitter. “Texas has lost an extraordinary person. Steve was a committed and effective fighter for justice, a wonderful husband, father and friend. He leaves behind a lasting impact on everyone who’s life he touched.”
