Meghan McCain: I wish Trump would apologize for POW comments

Meghan McCain, the eldest daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), said that she wants President Trump to apologize for his campaign-trail attacks on her father and a Gold Star family.

“I wish he would apologize. It’s that simple,” McCain told ABC’s “Nightline.” “I would implore him to apologize for it.”

As a presidential candidate in 2015, Trump blasted McCain, saying that the former prisoner of war was not a “war hero,” because he had been captured in Vietnam.

“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said at the time. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

McCain, who has served in Congress for 35 years and is currently battling an aggressive form of brain cancer, spent six years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down in Vietnam in 1967.

Trump also ignited a feud with Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the parents of a U.S. Army captain killed in Iraq in 2004, during his 2016 campaign after Khizr Khan spoke critically of Trump during the Democratic National Convention.

Meghan McCain called Trump’s refusal to apologize for his past remarks “dumb politics,” and suggested that his ego was preventing him from doing so.

“I think that maybe his ego is in the way or whatever,” she said. “But I would implore him at this moment to apologize for it.”
