McCarthy: ‘Case is closed’ on Trump and collusion

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) declared the matter of Russian collusion involving President Trump “closed” in a statement Sunday afternoon.

“After two years, two congressional investigations, and now the closure of a Special Counsel investigation with unfettered authority to investigate ‘any links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the Campaign of President Donald Trump’ it is abundantly clear, without a shadow of a doubt, there was no collusion,” McCarthy wrote.

“Furthermore, the nearly unlimited scope, resources, and subpoena power of the Special Counsel has allowed his team to fully pursue any matters that arose or may arise or may arise directly from the investigation. This case is closed.”

{mosads}McCarthy called the conclusion of Mueller’s investigation an “embarrassment” to congressional Democrats he accused of “act[ing] irresponsibly.”

In a summary of Mueller’s report submitted to Congress by Attorney General William Barr, the attorney general wrote that the investigation did not establish any collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russian government to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. It made no conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice in the investigation.

“After months upon months of manufactured outrage on this issue, it is time we move on for the good of the nation and focus on the job we were sent to Washington to do: work to address the real challenges facing our country,” McCarthy wrote.
