‘Tiger Mother’s’ daughter will be Kavanaugh clerk

The daughter of Yale law professor and self-branded “Tiger Mom” Amy Chua, who publicly supported Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, has landed a clerkship in Kavanaugh’s office.

Multiple news outlets are reporting that Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, a graduate of Yale Law School, will start her clerkship with Kavanaugh later this year.

{mosads}Chua, who reportedly works to place Yale graduates in prestigious federal clerkships, penned an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal in July 2018 praising Kavanaugh as a “mentor to women,” defending him in the face of three sexual misconduct allegations in the midst of his Supreme Court nomination hearings.

“I can’t think of a better judge for my own daughter’s clerkship,” she wrote. “These days the press is full of stories about powerful men exploiting or abusing female employees. That makes it even more striking to hear Judge Kavanaugh’s female clerks speak of his decency and his role as a fierce champion of their careers.”

In the op-ed, Chua also wrote that her daughter had accepted an appellate clerkship from Kavanaugh, who was a circuit court judge at the time. But if Kavanaugh was ultimately confirmed to the Supreme Court, she wrote, her daughter would probably find a different clerkship.

In a tweet written last year, Chua’s daughter said she was planning to join the Army and would not be “applying to SCOTUS anytime soon.”

Chua is known for her 2011 book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,” which popularized the concept of strict or demanding parenting.
