2020 Democratic candidates praise US women’s soccer after World Cup win
A host of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates on Sunday congratulated the U.S. women’s national team following its 2-0 victory over the Netherlands to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The U.S. women’s team earned its second consecutive title thanks to second-half goals from Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle, capping a dominant tournament in which the team never lost.
{mosads}”Congratulations to the @USWNT on their World Cup win,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) tweeted moments after the finish. “Your persistence on and off the field inspires girls and women everywhere to dream big, fight hard, and win.”
“Congratulations, ladies! You make us so proud, on and off the field,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) said before making a pitch for pay equality among the men’s and women’s national teams.
“Once again the @USWNT has proven they’re the best team in the world—now let’s make sure they’re paid like it,” she added.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) suggested he’d invite the team to the White House should he be elected president.
“Congrats to the @USWNT on your inspirational run to victory. US leadership on the world stage,” he said. “Meet you in the White House in 2021?”
Multiple U.S. players expressed opposition to President Trump amid the team’s run to the World Cup title. Rapinoe gained widespread attention last month after saying she would not accept an invitation to the White House.
Trump responded by tweeting that he is a “big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer” but added that “Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!”
Rapinoe’s teammate Alex Morgan said before Sunday’s final that the team would likely decide together whether it would visit the White House.
