Airbnb offers free temporary housing to those displaced by Nashville tornado

Airbnb is offering free temporary housing to those displaced after destructive tornadoes struck Tennessee on Tuesday.

The company announced in the aftermath of the storms that its Open Homes program would offer free and temporary housing in Tennessee for people with damaged or destroyed homes.

“This includes relief workers, neighbors who’ve had to evacuate, and others impacted by the event,” according to Airbnb’s website, USA Today reported.

Users may search for housing at any point between March 3 and March 24, select the number of adults and children within a group and find hosts who have voided all fees for those in need of shelter after the disaster.

Airbnb spokesperson Mattie Zazueta said Tuesday night that the company has “already seen more than 170 hosts sign up to offer their homes for free” in the few hours the program has been activated, according to the report.

Throughout the deadly storms, more than 100 buildings were demolished and more than 47,000 people were left without power, The Hill previously reported.

The disaster hit on Super Tuesday, closing more than 21 polling locations across the state. A Tennessee county judge ruled to leave polling stations open till 10 p.m.

At least 25 people died in the storms, with reports of at least two tornadoes on the ground in and around Nashville early Tuesday morning.
