National Cathedral lighting up in blue to honor health care workers

The National Cathedral will be illuminated in blue every night this week in tribute to health care professionals for their work throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

On the front of the cathedral, a bolded “Thank You” message will be displayed, according to WJLA.

The blue lights are provided by Atmosphere Lighting and will turn on every night starting at 8 p.m. 

The National Cathedral is closed and stopped allowing visitors last month due to social distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders issued on April 1 by Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D).

The cathedral said it recently donated 5,000 respirator masks to D.C. hospitals, including Georgetown University Hospital and Children’s National Hospital.

Other buildings such as the National Harbor and the Capital Wheel are illuminated in blue as well, according to WUSA9.

D.C. residents have also joined people in New York and other cities in publicly thanking health care workers.

Some residents in D.C. were filmed from their apartments on Tuesday clapping and making noise to thank health care workers for their hard work.

Bowser posted a tweet last week of her clapping outside her front door in support of health care workers.
