NY Mets player, coach test positive for coronavirus, prompting cancellation of game against Marlins: reports
A player and coach on the New York Mets have tested positive for the coronavirus, prompting the league to call off Thursday night’s game in Miami, according to multiple reports.
The reports come as MLB continues to see starts and stops for teams affected by the positive tests, which included two separate outbreaks on the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals earlier this season that forced multiple postponements and the creation of several doubleheaders.
The baseball season began in late July and will consist of just 60 games.
Unlike the NBA and NHL, which are having their teams play in “bubble” locations, the baseball teams are traveling between cities and stadiums.
The NBA and NHL have not had any positive cases of the coronavirus as they play their respective playoffs at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
Two players on the Mets have opted out of the season because of concerns over the coronavirus, with starting pitcher Marcus Stroman following outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.
“This is not something that I wanted,” Stroman said in an Aug. 10 statement. “This was a collective decision for my family, for our best interests. Because I’m such a competitor, it was incredibly hard to finally come up with this decision.”
