Jacob Blake no longer restrained at hospital after warrant vacated
Jacob Blake, the 29-year-old Black man who was shot multiple times by a Kenosha, Wis., police officer, is no longer restrained to his hospital bed, his attorney told CNN on Friday.
Blake was critically wounded Sunday afternoon after an officer fired seven rounds at him at close range after responding to a reported domestic incident.
The man had been handcuffed to the hospital bed where he is recovering from multiple surgeries after being shot in the back, his family said earlier this week.
Blake’s attorney told media outlets Friday that a warrant against Blake has since been vacated and deputies have since left his room at the hospital.
“Earlier today, Mr. Blake posted the bond underlying the arrest warrant, enabling his release from custody. The hospital watch was discontinued immediately after receiving this information from Kenosha authorities,” Milwaukee County Sheriff’s investigator Scott Still said in a statement reported by local ABC affiliate WISN.
A Kenosha county Sheriff’s Office spokesman had told CNN that Blake was handcuffed to his bed earlier this week due to felony warrants for his arrest stemming from prior incidents.
“Anyone with this classification level that we are guarding in the hospital would be treated in this manner,” spokesman Sgt. David Wright told the outlet.
In May, Blake was accused of unlawfully entering a home and sexually assaulting a woman in her bedroom before leaving with her vehicle, CNN reported, citing a criminal complaint it obtained.
The network noted that it was unclear if officers were aware of the reason for the warrant when they arrived at the scene on Sunday and before the shooting unfolded.
An attorney for Blake’s family, Benjamin Crump, has said that Blake was trying to deescalate the situation before he was accosted by police.
Blake’s shooting has led to protests in Kenosha and across the country this week.
On Tuesday night, two protesters were shot and killed and another was injured. Officials later arrested Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Illinois, who faces multiple homicide charges.
