French President Macron at retreat to ride out coronavirus diagnosis

French President Emmanuel Macron has gone on a retreat to Versailles as he rides out his coronavirus diagnosis.

He is quarantining at the presidential residence of La Lanterne within the city of Versailles and is being closely guarded by police. Officials with the presidency have not provided any details on his treatment, however, they have said that he is currently suffering with a headache, cough and fatigue, according to The Associated Press.

The French president has recently faced criticism for his behavior concerning the virus, with many pointing out that he has partaken in handshakes and meals among large groups of people, though he typically wears a mask and practices social distancing, AP reported.

Macron attended the EU summit in Brussels last week, where the French health minister suggested he may have been infected. He also held meetings in Paris this week, shaking hands and embracing the head of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Angel Gurria, on Monday, the news outlet reported.

Macron’s office called the move a “mistake,” according to AP.

Macron’s diagnosis was announced on Thursday. Officials with the presidency then stated that he would isolate for seven days and work remotely.

France has seen 2,483,524 coronavirus cases and 59,733 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins.
