Ex-Olympic swimmer Klete Keller indicted on seven charges over Capitol riot

Former U.S. Olympic swimmer Klete Keller has been indicted on more charges in connection to the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol.

A grand jury returned a new indictment on Wednesday charging Keller with seven crimes related to the riot, including civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, impeding passage through the Capitol grounds or buildings and as disorderly and disruptive conduct in a Capitol building.

Keller, 38, was arrested last month and originally charged with obstructing law enforcement, knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. He was released on bond on Jan. 22.

Former teammates and coaches recognized Keller from social media video posted by a reporter for conservative news site Townhall. Swimming news site SwimSwam reported that at least a dozen people identified him from the video.

Keller was seen wearing his Team USA jacket as he stands over a crowd that was shoving police officers trying to clear the Capitol Rotunda. The FBI pointed to the video in an affidavit filed Jan. 13., noting that the red and white Olympic patch was seen on the front left side of the jacket.

Keller, a former teammate of swimming star Michael Phelps, won five medals in three Olympic games, including gold medals at the 2004 games in Athens and in 2008 in Beijing. He most recently worked as a real estate agent for Hoff & Leigh, but the company has said that he “resigned from the company.”

Keller is one of more than 200 people charged in connection with the riot that sought to prevent Congress from certifying President Biden’s Electoral College victory.

Former President Trump was impeached for inciting the riot, though it is considered highly unlikely that a sufficient number of Senate Republicans will vote to convict him.
