All NY subway stations now have cameras

All 472 of New York City’s subway stations are now equipped with security cameras after the last of thousands of cameras were installed at the G line’s Broadway stop.

These cameras either stream real-time footage to the subway’s security center or record locally and can be used in future criminal investigations, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Monday.  

Subway ridership fell more than 90 percent at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. But as ridership plummeted, crime spiked, which prompted the installation of cameras to accelerate, according to The Associated Press.

In the last year, 200 stations have had cameras installed, and recent arrests have increased by 28 percent, according to the MTA. 

The MTA says it plans to work to adjust the placement of cameras to maximize coverage.
