Man arrested in attempted Times Square bombing
An arrest has been made in the attempt to bomb New York’s Times Square.
Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized American citizen from Pakistan, has been taken into custody while trying to board a flight to Dubai, according to Attorney General Eric Holder.
An e-mail linking the 30-year-old Connecticut man to the purchase of the Nissan SUV used in the attempt was key to the investigation.
Although no details have been released about whether Shahzad was trained by al Qaeda, he recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, according
to media reports.
The attorney general’s office in New York said Shahzad will appear in
federal court Tuesday to be formally charged.
President Barack Obama was notified of the arrest shortly after
midnight
on Tuesday morning by Deputy National Security Adviser John Brennan,
according to White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. The president was
briefed six times on Monday about the search for the suspect in the
bombing.
Holder suggested during a press conference announcing the arrest that
the authorities would press forward with the investigation into Shahzad,
including gleaning any intelligence possible about terrorist groups.
The administration had previously suggested that the suspect in the
attempted car bombing might have been a “lone wolf,” acting on his own
and without any ties to any terror group.
